At the age of 7, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma Bone Cancer, which is an extremely rare form of cancer, only 200 children are diagnosed with every year. While it is most commonly found in the leg, it was found in my left arm. The diagnosis changed my life completely. I was taken out of school, taken out of dance, constrained from seeing my friends, and put on a restrictive diet. Not only did I lose my social life, I lost my personality. When I looked in the mirror I saw the girl with luscious blonde hair, a glowing Floridian tan, and a smile that brighten the room, be replaced by a pale girl with no hair or confidence. I spent over a year in and out of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital receiving chemotherapy. I totaled in 12 scars and an inestimable amount of finger pricks. With the help of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and my family I finally became cancer free on April 23rd, 2012. As I reached towards my 10th year of being cancer free, I knew I wanted to give back and use my story to impact the future of childhood cancer for the better.
